POLYPROPYLENE
Polypropylene is the world’s second most widely used thermoplastic after polyethylene. It is produced by the polymerization of propylene. Polypropylene is used mainly for molding, filaments, fibers and films and is widely used to make molded containers and cars. There are three main grades of polypropylene resin allowing for changes in specific properties as determined by the composition of the polymer chain.
Polypropylene homopolymers are thermoplastic resins produced through the polymerization of propylene with catalysts. The homopolymers can be used in different processing technologies, such as blow molding, injection molding, film, sheet extrusion and thermoforming. Homopolymers provide a broad set of properties to meet market needs in packaging, household goods, textiles, film, healthcare, and pipe as well as applications in the automotive and electrical industries.
POLYETHYLENE
Polyethylene is the world’s most widely used thermoplastic and is made by the polymerization of ethylene. Polyethylene is often classified by its density, because greater density corresponds with greater material rigidity. The world’s largest volume polyethylene is high density polyethylene (‘HDPE’), which has a relatively high degree of tensile strength. Plastic containers represent the most common household use of high-density polyethylene. At the opposite end of the spectrum is low density polyethylene (‘LDPE’), which was the first type of polyethylene to be developed.
Flexible packaging represents the most common household use of low-density polyethylene. Both high- density polyethylene and low-density polyethylene are also commonly used for molding applications. Linear low-density polyethylene (‘LLDPE’) can usually be manufactured at a slightly lower cost than low density polyethylene and has similar basic properties. While low-density polyethylene and linear low-density polyethylene are to a certain extent substitutable for each other, one may be more suitable than the other for a specific application.
Vinyl chlorine monomer
Vinyl chlorine monomer (‘VCM’) is the primary raw material used in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (‘PVC’) resins and is produced by the reaction of ethylene and chlorine, which produces EDC that is then transformed into VCM by thermal cracking. PVC resin is then formed by the polymerization of VCM. PVC is made as two main product types, each subdivided into a range of grades to meet the requirements of specific applications. PVC is produced according to two types of polymerization techniques: suspension PVC and emulsion PVC.
General purpose PVC includes resins produced for general applications through suspension technology and represents the largest proportion of worldwide volumes produced. Specialty PVC comprises resins produced via emulsion polymerization
(including micro suspension, mini-emulsion, seeded emulsion, latex and Nano emulsion). PVC is used in a variety of applications in the building and construction, health care, electronics, automobile and other sectors, in products ranging from piping and siding, blood bags and tubing, to wire and cable insulation, windshield system components and more
